About Alex Ross: My Story
Back when I was a kid I told my parents I wanted to play football for Ohio State and at halftime go out and play in the marching band. That dream would lead me turn the volume down while playing video games and pretend to be a player in the game or sometimes pretend to be an announcer commentating the game. That kid loved sports with all his heart but he knew that he was never going to be a professional athlete. So, he set a dream to become a sports broadcaster so he could share his love of sports through the screen with everyone watching at home. And his dreams weren't set low, that kid dreamed of being on ESPN.
However, that dream took a backseat for a number of years through high school and part of college. Even though that young adult still wanted to be a broadcaster, he didn't pick it back up until two years ago. The young adult who procrastinated on everything had to set his sights back to the stars. I began working as a freelance broadcaster and took every chance I could get. In that period I have been able to call over 100 football, basketball, baseball, softball, and lacrosse games for the University of South Carolina, the Nike EYBL Scholastic, and a local high school on the award winning YouTube channel: Definite Fiction. I've been able to tell the stories of hundreds of athletes over my time and see them grow as people and players.
Through the friends and mentors that I had gained along this journey I honed my skills and have learned many different skills such as anchoring, writing, interviewing, producing, and of course, commentating. Over these past two years I have also been able to work one-on-one with an ESPN and SEC Network broadcaster, Mike Morgan, to help me perfect my craft as a commentator. I have made it my mission to provide a clear picture for the viewer at home while providing my own touch of energy to each and every broadcast. My goal has been to become better with each and every game as a broadcaster and I continue to do that.
Now, I have just graduated from the Univeristy of South Carolina and I am on the cusp of a new chapter in my life. Over the summer I will be with the Lexington County Blowfish of the wood-bat collegiate Coastal Plains League. Through this internship I will work to push out social media content, help with sales, write game reports, and be the main play-by-play announcer in the booth. This leads me to where I am today. Looking back on that young kid who couldn't stop playing NCAA '09 on the Wii, I can't help but wonder exaxctly what he'd say. But one thing is for sure, he would tell me to keep going and make your dreams a reality. And that is exactly what I intend to do.
